FToso - Foe. Chapter IV
[author: Francesca Toso - postdate: 2007-10-03]

Text: Coetzee's Foe
Task: Analyzing chapter four and trying to interpretate the message.

OBJECTIVES
Cultural: Reflecting on postmodern writing
Intertextual: Finding connections with other texts and media.

Linguistic: Improving writing skills

The last chapter of "Foe" looks different from the previous three.
The most evident feature is that the narrator changes:the narrator's voice isn't Susan's but a further character not well identified.
He pops up after a confused situation showed in chapter three, but the reader undestands something has happened: Susan is dead, Foe is dead, too. Everything is described in a dead atmosphere.
Only Friday seems to be alive but the reader knows that his behaviour is unreliable.
The new character seems  to know who the others characters are: he approaches Friday with the hope to know something and his hope is fulfilled: Friday utters a sound, something recalling the silence of the sea.
On the table of the room, the new character finds some letters addressed to Daniel Defoe.
At last, the chapter ends with a  new start of the novel: the last character finds himself on the island of Robinson and waits for  the moment when Friday mets Susan in  ghost-like form.

I think the writer tries to focus the reader's attention on the possible interpretations of something: maybe the last character knows the story and could find himself in a possible re-writing of Foe.

As  Susan entered the story written by Defoe, he could enter the same  story and re-write it from his point of view.
The end is not an end but it sounds more a new start. Every story includes a lot of stories.

The version proposed by Coetzee could be seen as an interpretation of life, where everyone is connected with other people but he could appear as invisible as well ,as the one of a ghost, as a result his version of our life would be different from our own or from the one of someone else.
An immediate way  to tell something could be that of creating a short film. You must surprise the audience and therefore you must check what is important to tell and you will tell it in a complete way, involving video, audio and speech, in a short time .
A director I met told me that a short film is a way to express something and to ask people to think about it, you don't give answers but you make men or woman ask him/herself something beyond what you show.
