Exercise 1
 

1) Have you ever seen a film called The Incredibles?.

2) Giuseppe Garibaldi died in 1882.

3) I can speak English but I have never studied German.

4) David bought this car two years ago.

5) My uncle was unemployed but now he has found a job.

6) Where did you go last weekend?.

 

 

Exercise 2

  • 1) I was sitting on the car when one of the legs broke.
  • 2) While I was waiting at the bus stop I saw a friend from my old school.
  • 3) The ship was sailing to Cuba when the hurricane hit it.
  • 4) When my father met my mother for the first time he was living in Milan.
  • 5) We heard the news on the radio while we were driving on the motorway.

Exercise 3 

  • 1) People waited impatiently outside in the steet until the bank opened.
  • 2) I got a big surprise when I opened the box.
  • 3) I recognized her voice as soon as she spoke.
  • 4) After Jennifer wrote the letter she went out and posted it.

Exercise 4

  • 1) Mozart was able to compose music when he was five.
  • 2) I couldn't change the wheel of the car.
  • 3) My mother wasn't able to drive until last year.
  • 4) Susan could speak when she was only one.
  • 5) Are you able to read Arabic?

Exercise 5

     

The well-known travel writer William Freeman has come to live in Winchester.

William Freeman was born in Glasgow where he spent his childhood. He began his career as a writer at the age of twenty-one while he was studying at Glasgow University. In 1937 he left Scotland and moved down to London, where he starter working as a reporter on the Daily Express. He began a life of adventure which has taken him to almost every part of the world , with one exception. " I ‘ve never been able to travel to South America," he confesses. "I've never had the opportunity".

Freeman has often found himself at the centre of world events. In 1939 , when the Second World War started, he was living in Germany." At first I couldn't get out of the country but, fortunately, I was able to escare in the end."

In 1946, after the War was over, he moved to China. He was working in Shianghai when the Chinese communists captured the city and he was able to see the revolution while it was happening.

In addition to Asia , Mr Freeman has also lived in Africa, Australia and the United States. He has written numerous books describing his experiences.

 

 

Exercise 6
