The Dove
The title suggest to the reader an imagine of the dove that is a symbol of pace, he/she thinks afterwards in the poem you speak about pace.
DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS
In the poem there is the figure of the dove, that is a white bird. It is associated with purity, innocence and the idea of pace, because the dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit and it is sent by God to then human beings to bring a message of reconciliation.
In fact the dove represents an idea of peace and the white colour stands for innocence and purity. The colour is in line with the colour brown of the earth. The first one represents something abstract and good, while the second represents something negative like war.
So the poet puts the two colours in assocation.
CONNOTATIVE ANALISYS
In the poem there are not pauses and lines are short. The poem does not convey an image. But a meaning of pace and war.
The poem presents similes that are expressed with "as", for example "fragile as dreams, as pottery" and "dark brown as earth".
The dove is a symbol of pace and earth is the symbol of war because battles are fought on the ground. There are anaphors: "dove", "as", "brown" and "and" are repeated in two near lines.
In the poem there are alliterations too, they are "s", "w", "y", and "d", for example of words "dove" and "dreams".
Besides there is an assonance of vowel "e" of words "dove" and "fragile".
There is a consonance of consonant "d" in the words "old" and "ground".
Finally, I think the poet conveys the meaning he wants through the poem and the reader understands that there is a contrast between pace and war.
