SBufo - Daffodils_video
[author: Sara Bufo - postdate: 2008-03-05]

The producer figured out his own idea of the poem I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud by creating a videoclip.

Since Romantic poems often rely on more than one sense, the producer decided to adopt a vehicle of communication which involves both sight and hearing.

Unfortunately, both senses are not reproduced in the best of ways. As a matter of fact, the narrative voice is covered by music and there is a total absence of colour: the video is a black & white movie.

The producer chose such a device to underline the fact that the poem is a memory, "an emotion recollected in tranquility". I think that such a choice weakens the content of the poem.

As a matter of fact, the producer didn't recreate the colorful and full-of-life atmosphere of the poem. The landscape  is not suitable at all, and no one "could not but be gay, In such a jocund company" since such company is surrounded by desolation.

Therefore, the producer probably decided to focus on the poet's sense of solitude.

But did the poet really feel alone? He certainly "wandered lonely", but didn't feel solitary. As a matter of fact, he compared daffodils to humans and felt joyful  in their company ("all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils").

Furthermore, since he personified daffodils, he would never have killed them by picking them as the protagonist of the movie does.
