ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT ON "ON CHESIL BEACH"
In this text I' m going to argue the difficulties about Florence and Edward's relationship.
I will follow and bind this elements together :
RELATIONSHIP
-Lovers
-Wife-husband
-Family
-Friendship
-Companion
IMPAIRED COMUNICATION
-Florence and her father
-Florence and her mother
-Florence and Edward
-Florence and her friends
GENDER DIFFERENCE
TABOOS
So, after analyzing the novel, I will report what I have extrapolate from the analysis.
The Edward and Florence's marriage is in decline .
I think the most relevant cause is the lack of clear dialogue. As a matter of fact all the difficulties relationships, the difficulties in sexual speech, the inexperience, the incapacity to express themselves, are caused by the silence.
As a consequence, even if Edward and Florence got married, they continued to live different and isolated life, hiding their problems and feel the other lover like a stranger. "they stood strangely together", "They are separately worried".
After this introduction I will report some elements in order to support my thesis:
Both the boy and the girl aren't a very good relation with family, Edward can't ask for an advices or have a normal speech with his mother because she is " brain damaged" and so he had to take care of her. "She was a ghostly figure, a gaunt and gentle sprite with tousled brown hair... absorbed in her hobbies and projects ...fumbling her way through the same simple piano pieces", " they were bound to protect her-in silence" , " he remained unembarrassed by his mother". Like Edward, Florence' impossibility is represented by her mother' coolness. "Was intolerant of Florence's regular practice routines ","She had never kissed or embraced Florence, even when she was small"
Another element is the difficulties in sexual speech caused by differences between the lovers and their companion. They feel inexperienced and they feel themselves far from friend's dialogues. Last, but not least this problem is related with the age restrictions .
So all of this elements involve all the youth's difficulties in relationship not only as regards the speech but also physical approach. "her problem, she thought, was greater physical disgust." " she experienced a visceral dread". "time when conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible." Moreover in this way, this fragile union, is influenced by the rise of taboos. As an example Florence can't say clearly her fear " It must be pretty obvious to you by now that..."
Another conclusions regards the decision to get married. The marriage is considered a way to grow up "This was still the era when to be young was a social encumbrance, a mark of irrelevance, a faintly embarrassing condition."," the marriage was the beginning of a cure", and to evade from their reality and it is also considered a way in order to resolve couple's problems. "He was simply impatient for his life".
It just goes to show the youths understand their mistakes only after their marriage's end. They realized that their wedding could be salved using the dialogue. A further demonstration is set at the end of the novel when they became adults and realized they are still in love, and they think about the things they didn't do or say. "Love and patience, would surely have seen them both through. ", " This is how the entire course of a life can changed-by doing nothing".
