OLIVER TWIST
1)Orphans were an important problem. In the Victorian Age they were introduced in workhouse. The extract underlines the problems that Oliver Twist, an orphan, had to live.
In this pass he was obligated to ask more food. The workhouse gave to each boy a basin of gruel per diem. The master ,who is the official serving out food, remained surprised because it was the first time that a child asked more food. He talked with Mr Limbkins, who is the chairman. They decided that the boy will pay the face. Mr Limbiks said that "the boy will be hung". All aspects of the scene strike me because they seemed real.
2-3)The writer sides with poor and undefended people because the writer wants to criticize the society of the time and to show the problems of poors. He is influenced of the philosophy of the utilitarism. It believe that an action is good if it helps the major number of people. He wanted to show to the world the condition of the orphan and to find a solution for the problem.
4) The story is real and the episodes told real problems of the society. It is based on realistic facts and for this reason anybody can negate the opinion of the narrator.
3.a)Have a humor effect these details:" a long grace was said over the short commons" . He ridiculed the prayer because it wanted to be grateful for the meal. The meal was insufficient.
He used Latin words to describe the distribution of meals. He used basin of gruel per diem. "Per diem" is a Latin word that means: "for a day". He ridiculed the abundance of the meals.
3.b) The master had to clung for support to the copper. It is an exaggeration. He ridiculed the board because he compared the meal of the directorate with the meal of the pope or a king.
Finally there was the repetition that intended to criticize and ridicule. The writer repeated the sentence "boy will be hung".
