-Read the text and briefly summarise what happens.
A group of young boys were without enough food for three months. They were so hungry to think that someone would eat somebody else. So they decided to send someone to the master to have more food. They decided to send Oliver Twist.
At lunch after the first share, Oliver asked another dish. The master was astonished. He went to the orphanage board; he referred what Oliver had said and they became angry. Mr Limbkins said that Oliver will be hanged, because he didn’t respect his orders.

-Which aspects of the scene strike you as being taken from real life?
In my opinion, it’s the mistreatment to young guys.
-Which group of characters do you think the writer sides with? Give reasons of your choice.
He sides with the guys, because he underlines them critical situation.
-What do you think the main target of the writer’s criticism is?
It’s change the judgement and behaviour with children and adults have to consider them more.
-Can the reader form a different opinion from the narrator’s? Explain why or why not.
In my opinion he can’t, because the reader sympathizes for children’s situation.

-Consider the general condition/feelings before Oliver’s request. What detail/s has/have a humorous effect in spite of the tragic condition of the children?
They had chosen Oliver randomly. Moreover the children encourage Oliver with wink and nudged him.
-Mark the various characters’ reactions after Oliver’s request. Which of the devices listed above have been used to describe these reactions?
The master became pale and astonished.
Assistants were paralyzed.
Mr Limbkins became angry.

-In what way are the pupils different from those of an ordinary school? What evidence of their ill-treatment is given in the text?
They are mentally retarded and with some other difficulties, they aren’t as in other schools, they were too calm and they need spelling to understand a lot of words.
-How does Mr Squeers define his teaching method? What is his actual aim? Why do you think he gives an explanation to Nicholas? What do his words reveal about him and his qualifications as a teacher?
He defines it as useful. His aim is learn grammar to children. He explains it to Nicholas to have a verification of his method. He says that he learned bottiney and philosophy.
-Do Mr Squeers’ wife, son and school reflect his personality?
Yes, because he isn’t sure of what he does.
-Does Nicholas’ opinion about what is going on come out at all?
No, because it’s not clear.

-Give examples of negative aspects and comic details in Mr Squeers’ description and behaviour.
He doesn’t know the right spelling of the words and has a weak knowledge in latin
-Would you say Mr Squeers is a well-rounded character or a flat character?
In my opinion he is well-rounded because he tries to have confronted with Nicholas.
-What kind of narrator tells the story? Which character/s do you think he sides with? Give reasons for your answer.
It’s a third person narrator, because he uses verb at third person. He sides with the children, but also with Mr Squeers, because he describes them in a sweet way.
