Homework - Charles Dickens

Es 1 pg 12

In the workhouse children suffered starvation for three months, so they decided that one boy had to ask for more gruel. Oliver Twist should do it..

During the dinner Oliver went to the master and asked more food, the master was very surprise but Mr. Bumble became very angry with Oliver because Oliver contradict the rule to have only a basin of gruel for day.

Mr.Limbkins said that Oliver should be hung!

Es 2 pg 13

2.1 The aspects of the scene strike taken from real life are the hard condition of workhouse, the absence of food for children and the imposition of strict rules for the boys.

2.2 I think the writer sides with the boys because he explains very well their situation and the difficulty of the boys  to have more food.

2.3 The main target of the writer's criticism is to show to the readers the difficult conditions of life of boys in a workhouse and also the fact that the boys couldn't have enough food as they wanted.

2.4 I believe that is difficult to have a different opinion from the narrator's because the writer with a particularly use of verbs and adverbs expresses a imply judgment.

Es 3 pg 13

3a The details that have an humor effect are:

they lots were cast to ask more gruel.

Oliver should ask two times his request because the master was very surprise for a very simply request.

3b " he gazed in stupefied astonishment" "the assistants were paralysed" "the master aimed a blow at Oliver's head with the laddle, pinioned him in his arms, and shrieked aloud for the beadle"

The writer exaggerates details and ridicules what he intends to criticize.

3c "Mr.Limbkins, I beg your pardon sir! Oliver Twist has asked for more! There was a general start"

" that boy will be hung"

Es 1 pg 14

The boys had lunch

They went to the class

Squeers explained to Nickleby the right behavior  in the class.

Es 2 pg 16

2.1 Those pupils are different from those of an ordinary school because they have some difficulties, the best boy was cleaning the back par lour window and the second one was weeding the garden. These are clear signs of  ill-treatment.

2.2Mr. Squeers definite his teaching very useful, his actual aim is to teach bottinney and philosophy.

He gives an explanation to Nicholas to show him what Nicholas will do there.

2.3 Yes, because they feel themselves better of the children in the school. Mr. Squeers is very self-confident, too.

2.4 No, Nicholas answers with short sentences, but I believe he doesn't explain his very thoughts, he only consents to Mr.Squeers.

  Es 3 pg 16

3a " so saying and eyed Nicholas with a look, half cunning and half doubtful, as if he were not altogether certain what he might think of him by this time" Mr. Squeers wants to look like very self-confident and he believes to understand and dominate boys, but he can't understand Nicholas behavior.

3b I believe Mr.Squeers is a flat character, in fact he is so sure of his action that he doesn't think he can wrong, he believe to be the absolute authority of the schoolwork.

3c The story is told by a third person omniscient narrator.  The narrator sides with the boys in fact he ridicules Mr. Squeers.
