- The fox is a wild animal. It is very quick and smart. The title can be considered a metaphor because "Fox" might be refered to a very clever person. (in the story, Henry, that subjugates March)
- The short story is organized into four parts. The first part has an introductory function since it introduced the reader to the main characters and to the setting where the story takes place. The second part tells the reader about the development of the story. The third part presents the obstacle of the short story, and the last part tells about its tragic conclusion. In brief, in the first part of the story the novelist describes the characters and the setting, namely the story of two girls who live on a farm in a small village. Suddenly, a boy enters their lives. The girls are March and Banford. In the second part, the boy asks March to marry him. In the third part March, influenced by Banford, does not want to marry the boys. And in the last part Banford is killed by a tree.
- The three main character are described not only through their physical appearance, but also through their manners, attitude, economic background, marital status, clothes, skills, feelings, hobbies and personalities.
- The story takes place on a farm, during the First World War (1914-18). In that period it was not strange to see women running farms and business, since their husband were at the front or in the army camp. Other place of the story are the small village and the army camp in Salisbury.
- My favourite character in the novel is Banford because she has a very important function in the story. In fact, she tries to obstacle March to marry Henry and, during the story she is very angry and worried for her friend's destiny with Henry, who is the "perfect unknown". She is very self-assured and changes her personality during the story. In the first part of the story she is very shy, but then she changes her manners.
- The narrator is omniscient and the writer uses dialogues to stress the relationship between the characters and uses repetitions and metaphors. Moreover, the writer uses surnames for the two girls for the first name to stress the peculiar characteristics of both girls. March reminds the reader on relevant month that, in turn, reminds on spring. Banford reminds on a verb: "to ban" that means putting something or someone aside.
- The language used in the short story is not easily understandable because some words are not used any longer and also because the novelist describes the scenes with abundant details which, in my opinion, deviate the reader's attention from the main events occurring in the novel.
- As far as the war is concerned, the novel tells the reader about the hardship of this period. It is marked by poor living conditions, famine due to scarcity of food and economic difficulties. The novel shows all this in several parts and through many sentences and descriptions, as for example, when it informs the reader that a law to save power was issued in that period.
