Fifth chapter analysis

Denotative analysis:

In the fifth chapter Edward and Florence had their last speech. They argue on the beach. At last of the argument she escaped, and came back to her home in Oxford. The next day Edward came back to home too. More years ago she became a famous violinist and she had a concert at the Wigmore Hall. He went to London and here he writes a series of short history, he spent his time in the administration of various rock festivals, he worked in a record shop and wrote rock reviews for small magazines. He had more love relationships but none was significant for him. Then he works in High Wycombe to help brain-damaged children.

Connotative analysis:

The chapter starts with Florence's point of view. From the text and from Florence's reflections and dialogues the intelligent reader can understand that she does not to deal her problems with her husband, she prefers to pass over them because she always changes object. Instead from Edward's point of view he wants to remedy their problems. He tries to speak to her, he wants to save their marriage. He wants to grow up. The intelligent reader can understand that because in his life he tries to have other relationships to open his heart again and to forget Florence, though unsuccessfully. Basically he wants to live his life and not to wait for her for ever as she does.
