The story is focused on gender difference between Florence and Edward. They are young and inexperienced and consequently there is a first taboo. They are in love and married, but they have not sex. Their problem is the communication about their fears and their expectations. They belong to different families: Florence is rich and lives in a big house, while Edward ‘s parents live modestly. Both have not a lot of friends: Florence belongs to a string quartet and her friends are of university; Edward goes with his university’s friends, they drink together and he often hits others young.
There are some impaired communications: Florence and Edward are both young, virgin and British and they are both rich in expectations, because they are inexperienced. Edward is afraid of physical approaching with Florence, while she hope to have sex because she is married. They do not talk of their problems because they live in a closed society. In addition they thought to be free marrying because the become adults. Besides they are not happy to stay together. As a matter of fact she loves Edward, but she doesn’t prove a strong passion. That means she is not only a lover, but she is obedient like a daughter and strict like a mother. Besides he condescends to her times and her timidity.
As a matter of fact she does not allow to be touched by Edward although she loves him. Besides Florence can not confide in her mother, because her mother isn’t able to focus attention on her daughter’s problem, probably because she is ashamed about sex and she isn’t able to create a relation ship.
In addition there is a particular relation ship between Florence and her father, because he rapes his daughter, but often their relation ship seems as a normal relation ship between father and daughter.
Finally Florence can not to confide in her friends, because they are gossip girls and very communicative. Therefore Florence has bought a guide of sex.
