THE CLOSET SCENE
The play in the castle has just ended, when Gertrude decides to summon her son. The closet scene takes place in Gertrude's one, where Hamlet shows her a picture of his father and Claudius. They were brothers and in the picture they are together. The scene is a Hamlet's monologue, who compares the old king to the new one. He speaks in a bitter, mocking way and pretends to be crazy. Hamlet uses the imperative, because he is rebuking his mother; he underlines that they are brothers and even if they are, they are very different. In fact hamlet's father looks very good, he has grace and lots of qualities of god. They are a model for all the other people. On the other hand Claudius is like a diseased ear of corn infecting his brother. So Hamlet uses the portrait as a way to make a psychological analysis, by comparing physical appereances.
