•1.    Illustrate the main features of Metaphysical Poetry.

The term metaphysical poetry, first used by John Dryden in his "essay on satire" and Samuel Johnson gave it popularity. "Metà" means beyond and "physics" means sensuous. The basis of metaphysical poetry is the elaborate style and the search of the unusual. Metaphysical poetry adds elements of surprise by the use of unexpected metaphors from different sources: geography, geology, astronomy, religious and philosophical ideas. In addition a kind of metaphysical poetry had been used by Shakespeare in his comedies.

•2.    Discuss the message of J. Donne's A Valediction Forbidding Mourning

John Donne's metaphysical poem, has a clear message: do not cry or make noise because of a separation, because real love is not confined to the body. Donne explains the reasons that justify his invitation "not to cry": love is not real if the physical aspect of love in not connected to the mind. If two lovers are really in love there is no distance that can separate them.

•3.    Illustrate the causes of Civil War in England

When James I died Charles I passed on the throne in 1625. Charles ruled like his father - to be king for divine nature - and during his reign, English society became affected by religious differences. The middle class became stronger and in opposite position to the crown. In 1625, Charles imposed taxation without parliamentary consent. So in 1628 Parliament presented the famous Petition of Rights. Later the king rejected the petition and in 1640 he wanted money for a war against the Scots. The middle class or the commons organized by Puritan leaders attacked the crown and in 1642 the civil war broke out.
