POLITICS: When James I came to the throne in, after Elizabeth I ’s death, the situation between the Parliament and the monarchy got worse: the crucial point of such an hostility was when the king Charles I was executed. All of the kings belonging to the dynasty of the Stuarts believed in the divine right of monarchs.
LITERATURE: Even literature was influenced by the period: the main themes of poetry were about God and a new view of love: it was born the metaphysical idea of love. It was not only abstract and ideal anymore, but it was made of passion and sensuality too.
SCIENCE: Many discoveries characterized the 17th century: new approaches and knowledge were born. Science played an important role.
JOHN MILTON: Paradise Lost
Milton was one of the most important literary men in England. His most famous poem, Paradise Lost, is an epic poem about Heaven, Hell, creation and Adam and Eve’s fall. The stories are about situations taken from the Bible: they focus on difficult choices and temptation.
