Up to  Creative Writing Experiences. Characterization in PoetryUp to task document list

The poet starts the characterization with “there was” that is typical to fairy. The poet introduces the woman with the word wife that underlines her social class (she is well-off indeed she has lots of precious dresses) and she is a business woman. Indeed she is the best cloth maker of Ypres and Ghent, so the poet gives also information of the place in which she lives.

Besides from the 6th line the reader understands that she is superb and she wants always to be the 1st. In creating the character adopts her style of dressing to underlines that she is vain, superb and not at all modest; they were very precious so the reader understands that she is well-off.

In addition the poet gives information about her physical appearance and about her lovers (she had 5 husbands) and it is a different attitude of the wife, she is more similar to a prostitute. She is respected only because she has money and power.

Then there are information about her voyages and the narrator says that the wife is wrapped up. This is a parody because the woman had lots of lovers.
