Textuality » 4A Interacting
In this poem Pope is making a parody of an aristocratic woman. This is a mock heroic poem, so a poem in which he criticize people who once were celebrated.
The poet is describing the action of Belinda when she wakes up. Every action is magnified in order to make her ridiculous.
Right from the start the poet uses a high vocabulary to describe a woman who is putting the makeup on. He uses the word "displayed" to describe how the vase are arranged on the table. Moreover the vase are described as "silver vase" this makes the reader understand the poet is exaggerated everything in order to make the parody. As a matter of fact a vase of cream is not so important as to be silver.
At line 2 Belinda is described as a " nymph intent to adores". From this line the reader can understand that she is very vain, moreover with this description the poet want to underline the behaviour of the aristocracy at the time. As a matter of fact the reader can understand that she just thinks to her beauty and she does not think to the problem of the society. Maybe we can make some reference with the politics of our period. When the poet writes " cosmetic powers" we can understand that the most beauty aristocratic lady are artificial, not natural, in contrast romanticism loves nature. At line 5 there is a synecdoche, the poet uses the word glass to refer to a mirror, after that he says " to that she bends": he uses the demonstrative pronoun that in order to create distance, he juxtapose the terms. Moreover at line 7 the poet makes a reference to the classical culture, he uses the word "priestess" and the reader may think he has a good opinion of Belinda, but the poet adopted the adjective "inferior", the effect is to reduce the priestess. On one side he compares a common person to a character of religious field but by using the adjective inferior he makes the reader understand he just want to criticize her, describing her as an artificial priestess. In addition the poet describes the table as an altar: so, something sacred is compared to something which is only material, we can understand that for this lady sacred and important things are these kind of objects. "Trembling beings": here the poet uses an alliteration of the consonant "b" in order to create confusion.
