The renaissance is a period of time in Europe between 14th and 17th centuries, when art, literature, philosophy and scientific ideas became important and a lot of new art was produced. The meaning of the word "renaissance" is that something is born again. The most important code of the renaissance was the central position of the Human being. Another important features was the consolidation of the Tudor dynasty with Elizabeth I. England became protestant.

The sonnet is a lyrical form of poetry. It speaks about: personal affairs, emotions and personal feelings. In Italy the Petrarchian sonnet developed, which is composed by 14 lines, organized into two parts, an octave and a sestet. The octave typically introduces the theme or problem and the sestet provides the solution. In England the sonnet was firstly introduced by Wyatt, but because of some metrical problems, the structure was new arranged. So the Shakespearean or Elizabethan sonnet was born. Structure: three quatrains and a rhymed couplet. The three quatrains expresses three different points of view of the problem posed. The main theme of the sonnet was courtly love and addressed to a woman.

The religious code in the Middle Ages was connected to the salvation of the human soul. For the religious code the human body was like a prison for the soul. In the Middle Ages the church had a central position because people were afraid of the stories about Satan and hell.
