I hope that after the next election the new government will reduce tax on petrol. It’s already very expensive to own a car, and prices have increased a lot during the last few years. It really depends on which party wins. Some politicians say they will get rid of road tax completely, but I think that might be excessive. I haven’t decided who to vote yet, but I definitely will vote, I think it’s very important.

A Does anybody want to come for a swim at 5 a.m. tomorrow?
B You’re crazy. Everybody’s in bed at five in the morning.
A Yes. So it’s great time for a swim – there’s nobody in the pool.
B Well, ask somebody else. At five in the morning I want to be asleep.

Hello? Is that you Jim? Good. There’s something we have to talk about. Before I start, is there anything you want to tell me? ... No? Well, we talked to Pete and he told us everything. I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do about it now.

A I couldn’t find my keys anywhere.
B Well, they have to be somewhere.
A But I looked everywhere!

Jane and Anna are going to catch a train to London.

Jane is a big football fan and she bought a ticket for Arsenal on the Internet. She’s going to watch a match when they’re in London. Anna doesn’t know what to do while Jane’s at the match. Perhaps she’ll write some postcards.

After the match, they are going to walk along the River Thames so they can see the House of Parliament and the London Eye. After that they think they’ll go for a eat. London taxis are quite expensive so they are going to travel on buses or the Underground.

Anna’s uncle lives in London. They are going to stay with him tonight. He has got tickets for a musical and they are going to see it tomorrow evening.

8

Dear Oliver,

I’m writing this in a café in London! I’m here for a few days with Jane. We are going to do lots of nice things while we’re here. Later today, we are going to go sightseeing. Perhaps we’ll see some famous people too! My uncle is going to call us to see a musical tomorrow and on Monday Jane and I’m going to buy new dresses for your party. I hope they won’t be too expensive!

I’ll call you when I get home and tell you all about the musical.

Best wishes,
Anna.

Tomorrow night at school, there is going to be a talk by a famous environmentalist. The talk is all about the problems cause by pollution and what we can do about it. I read his book – it was very interesting. He says that if we don’t change our ways, the greenhouse effect will get so bad that we won’t be able to stop it. Temperatures will rise too high. He also writes about the effect of acid rain on our forests and says that we should use lead-free petrol to make our cities cleaner. I’ll ask him to autograph my book for me!

16

1 If they offer me that work, I’ll invite everybody to a party in my house!
2 I’m an Aires. They say this year will be a lucky year, I’ll have a lot of success at work and I’ll meet an interesting person.

   B: Don’t worry. You’ll certainly remember something!
7 I can’t find my wallet anywhere! I looked everywhere!
8 Maybe I’ll go studying in the USA next year, if I have enough money.

The world’s changing climate

18

1 Climate change and the future
2 Changing our behaviour
3 International action

19

1 heatwave = a period of unusually hot weather
2 long-term = continuing for a long period of time in the future
3 slow down = to make something happen less quickly
4 renewable = something that is replaced as it is used
5 standby = ready to use when needed
6 protocol = the rules for correct behaviour
7 control = to have the power to change something

20

1 in the past, the world’s climate didn’t change. F
2 nowadays, all climate change is natural. F
3 scientists don’t know exactly what will happen to our weather in the future. T
4 there will probably be wars about water. T
5 there won’t be any more wind farms in Europe. F
6 it’s a waste of time to save energy in your home. F
7 the Kyoto Protocol was an agreement between Asian countries. F
8 all the countries of the world are going to reduce their greenhouse gases. F

21

1 The world’s temperatures are changing: it is becoming hotter. There are many unusual phenomenon like hurricanes, heavy rains, acid rains and heatwaves.

2 Europe will probably become hotter and wetter. The oceans water-level may increase. There probably won’t be enough water for anyone. Cities will certainly become more polluted.

3 We should reduce our greenhouse gases. We should pay more attention to the TV and to the other ways the scientists can explain what will probably happen by. We shouldn’t waste energy. We should use renewable energy.

4 The government should make laws to take care of the environment. It should give sanctions to who doesn’t respect them. It should allow more advertisings and programs about this.
