Up to  Postmodernism and PossessionUp to task document list

TASK 1

The film Possession is set in Yorkshire and London. It shows some important places of the city. The spectator comes across the London Library, a Victorian house, a small village in Yorkshire and the academic world.
Right from the start the spectator understands that the academic world is the base of the film. As matter of fact the discovery of two letters by Randolph Henry Ash gives the starts to the research of an American scholar: Roland. Trough Roland’s eyes the spectator  can see how researchers works.
The letters is read by the voice of protagonists. When they read there are flashbacks in which are showed the moment when the letters were wrote.
The passage from present to past is conveyed showing the same places one time in the past and one in the present in which between the two moment there is a common theme

As in the romance there are different ideas of possession in the film.
Love possession are expressed by the discussions of the four protagonist: Moud and Roland, Lamotre and Ash.
the obsession of Crooper it to put one's hand on precious letters, documents, objects of research. But also Maud and Roland tries to have some documents too.
The characterization of the four protagonist is made up by their aspects, dialogues and actions. Lamotte and Ash’s characterization is filtered by the information that the two scholars gives to us.
The love story between the two poets is mean point of the research of the scholars . It influences the love story between the two scholars .

TASK 2

After watching the film you can find some differences between film and novel. The movie is shorter and more direct than the novel: it shows the scenes in sequence without stopping on the descriptions and it shows only the mean point of the novel. But you can see that the movie follows the content of the novel.

The person who watches the film can rapidly understand the story and the relationships between the characters, the person who reads the book finds more difficulties in following all the events.

The two love stories developed at the same time therefore it is possible to compare them. The love story of the poets runs parallel to the love story of the scholars. The past is very important because the story starts in the past and it is necessarily to understand the present. The characterization is built through action, movement, expression and dialogue. I think that the performance of actors is not very brilliant because they are able to communicate emotions and feelings only in a part. The message the film director wants to convey is the incessant research to discover the truth. On the other side the novel's message is connected to the  consciousness of the presence of more truths. Postmodernism comes to surface through the fragmentation in the narration of the events and through the concept that no one can know the truth. I think that the film reflects only superficially the content of the novel but it gives all information to understand storyline.
