Exercise 2 page 337:
1) Jude is scared when he hears a shriek from Sue.
2) He runs to the room and he realises that it was empty.
3) When he looks round the room he notices that his two children were hanging from a nail.
4) Although he is terrified, he cuts the cords with his pocket-knife
5) Then he calls for help and a doctor
6) Jude and Sue reach the conclusion that the two children were dead.
7) They find a piece of paper with a message written on it.
8) The doctor thinks that it was on the nature of the boy to do it.
Exercise 3:
1) The boy’s face reflects his fear in living in that society. He felt as a burden for his family.
2) Jude and Sue are interrupted by two people probably talking about what happened.
3) Jude’s biggest fear is being judged by others about what have recently happened.
4) Sue believed that what happened was her fault.
5) Sue made Father Time mad the night before. She felt guilty but Jude did not agree with her. He knew that she did not wanted to make their kid angry at them.
Exercise 4:
The narrator focuses is attention from the general to the minimum details. Example: (line 13) “Half-paralyzed by the strange and consummate horror of the scene he let Sue lie, cut the cords with his pocket-knife and threw the three children on the bed…”
Here, the narrator, focuses his attention on what Jude is doing not on what he feels.
Exercise 5:
Hardy’s children differ from Dickens’s because they are sett in a crude and poor scenery not in the middle of an industrialized society.
