After the I World War Europe was destroyed. All the country which joined the war were searching for a solution to the lack of national identity that the war brought. So governments create the cult of the Unknown Soldier, a sort of memorial to remind people about unidentified soldiers that died during the war.
This action was addressed to citizens and was made to remember and to celebrate war casualties, a body for all body. The cult of the Unknown Warrior it is also a sort of celebration that allow people to face with the war tragedy. Indeed these form of memorial are useful for whom is alive and not for the victims; it is worthwhile to every wife, mother, relative or friend. So this rite promote peace and it always remind people the war’s tragedy, but also have the purpose of unify citizens under the same ideal to “resolve” the lack of national identity which turn out during the war . Indeed monuments like the Unknown Soldier one are also useful for governments, indeed they present war as a required action to give stability and peace to all citizens.
But from the different texts I read, in my opinion, this cult promotes both war and peace. For example the Italian Unknown Soldier during the Fascism became a way of propaganda to the second World War’s enlistment.
So, over the years the cult of the Unknown Soldier has changed its function; from a memorial to unify the population to a way of propaganda. Even today this rite has taken a new meaning but it always should makes people reflect about war and peace.
