EVELINE - Analysis
The text is an extract taken from Dubliners, written by James Joyce. The story is set in Dublin.
The main character is Eveline, daughter of a Victorian man.
According to the standard of the Victorian Age, her task was to be the angel of the house: she had only to be subjected to her father (as well as her mother did) and to work in the house. Eveline gives importance to the society’s point of view about her and therefore she does not want to break free from the moral standards of the Victorian Age. Differently from her mother she could not accept her role and she decided to take her chance to escape from her life with Frank. Therefore one of the themes of the extract is escape.
The poet focuses his attention on Eveline’s feelings and thoughts. Her will to escape is juxtaposed to her insecurity to leave her family (because of her promise to her dead mother).
The extract begins with the description of the setting: her house represents a prison made of by emotions and memories. The dust, the old photo, pastor’s photo convey the idea of something old and desolated and immobile; pastor’s photo also provides Eveline’s family’s religious attitude.
The narrative technique consists of the third omniscient narrator which one moment provides Eveline’s point of view and later he provides his point of view about the story. As a consequence there is a shift between different points of view. (flusso di coscienza). The narrator uses the indirect speech, reach of different register and languages to provide the interior monologue.
In the first moment Frank embodies a hero who made Eveline free from her meaningless life but then he reveals as someone who forces her to go away with him. Frank represents an opposite character to Eveline because he is sure about his will and he is determinate.
Another theme is the theme of paralysis: Eveline can not make decision as well as she can not leave her family. The only thing she can do in the moment when she has to decide what to do is to stay immobile.
