In this part the intelligent reader can understand how fells Eilis in this tragically situation.
When Father Flood tells to Eilis that her sister Rose had died, she didn’t want to believe and she tries to convince himself that it isn’t a real scene.
The intelligent reader, through the narrator in third person who he tells with Eilis’s point of view, can understand all of Eilis’s sentiments, indeed she feels powerless and guilty because she fails to resign for not having understood that Rose was ill.
In all of these pages Eilis doesn’t want to acknowledge the reality, only when she hears her mother’s voice on the other side of the phone, she realizes that the Rose’s death is really happened.
