Analysis to page 169 to 177 chapter 3 Brooklyn

This part of the story is very important in the economist of the novel, indeed it describes one of the most relevant event of the novel: Rose's death.

The paragraph starts with the presentation of Eilis's normal workday. All this is makes by an third person narrator and the reader understand the situation from Eilis’s point of view .In the second page something happens: Miss Fortini tells Eilis to follow her in the office. This is making by a shift between the telling and the showing technique. These create suspense in the reader and also to communicate the reader Eilis's feeling directly. Miss Fortini maintains a detached behaviour become they are in a work environment. Furthermore there is a growing anxiety made thanks to short phrases and pressing questions.

In this events Father Floot is crucial because is he to announce Eilis Rose's death. He creates an intimate situation( Eilis is leaded by Miss Fortini in a small room) and all is make by the use of showing technique. Father Flood talks about organisation but at the same time he appears like a father figure.

Eilis reacts with a hysterical behaviour, as the reader can expect, but at the same time she lives it like a nightmare. These pages are full of religious reference like: to pray, Rose's soul. So the intelligent can understand the importance of the religion for the Irish people especially in situation like that.

In the second paragraph at page 173 begin the conversation between Eilis and her mother. Eilis is upset because she couldn't be there with her mother but the attention is on Rose, Eilis's feelings are put in the background. Also the attention is put on the mother who is alone: "I have no one at all now, Eilis, I have no one" this repetition makes clear the mother's feelings.

In the last part Eilis is at Mrs Kehoe's house with Tony, but she wants to be leave alone, and here the narrator shows another aspect of the protagonist character: she is more strong. And also it is shows the false compassion that Mrs Kehoe makes in front of Eilis.

In the last part the attention is on Rose, and how she was and at the funeral.
