Cleopatra’s characterization
In the second scene of the second act Shakespeare characterises Cleopatra using Enobarbus words : she was characterized indirectly in the first act, too.
First of all Enobarbus connotates Cleopatra as a thief ( “she pursed up his heart”), referring to the fact that Antony as soon he saw Cleopatra fell in love with her.
Enobarbus refers to Cleopatra describing all the things that are around her (the barge, the poop, the sails, the oars..) and what is happening around her (on each side…undid did). All the adjectives used in the exchange I’m analysing belong to the semantic group referred to richness indeed the poop, the sails are connotate as gold, purple colours that stand for wealth, richness and power. He doesn’t describe her physical aspect, he only says “for her own person, it beggared all description”. So her appearance can’t be compared with anything else. He underline her high position describing her clothes: “cloth-of-gold tissue”, return the adjective gold. Cleopatra is represented with the imagine of the fire (“burned on the water”) and her behaviour is compared to the water (“on the water”, “the water which they beat to follow faster”).
All this elements convey the idea that Cleopatra was a fascinating, confident, a woman in a high position; she is also connotate as an enchantress focus the attention on the way Antony fell in love with her.
