“Brooklyn” positive review
“Brooklyn” is a novel written by Colim Toibin. The story won the Costa Novel of the Year Award, in 2009.
It is set in Ireland and New York, as the title suggest, in the early 1950s. It talks about a young woman, Eilis, who crosses the ocean to have more job opportunities and to begin a new life.
This is novel really amazing. Every page you read is a surprise. It is full of details and the reader can really feels the protagonist emotion.
It is divided in four chapters, each of them tells about different aspects of the 1950s. In the romance is debated the theme of the immigration, the economic difficulties which are fundamental to understand the period where the story is set. These aspects of the novel are written using narrative technique, like the telling and showing, which really involve the reader.
Inside the description of these important themes there is also a love story between Eilis and an Italian boy. The story between them is really absorbing, all will fall in love with it.
When you start reading “Brooklyn” you can not stop to do it. You will say: “please don’t finish”. It is really involving and very well written. Nothing is taken for granted. The plot’s development is always unpredictable. My advice is just read it.
