The Celts
In the following text I’m going to discuss about the Celtic population starting to their most important and known figures: the Druids.
They were very considered people, not because of their birth class but for their skills and values; they took care of the health, the education, the religious rituals.Hance they were essential for the communities, which were very tied ones; each with different costumes, traditions and rituals.
Talking about rituals, we know thanks to the archaeological sources that the Celts used to execute bloody cerimonies: they sacrificed humans by beheading, especially slaves and enemies.
Cerimonies were held near sacred water, like wells and springs in the woods. What is interesting to notice is that the location and the bloody ritual is not randomly choosen: in fact they knew water was fundamental and woods as well, because the Celts lived of hunt and fishing. Furthermore cutting off enemies heads and displaying them as trophies was ordinary, the Celts thought the seat of the spiritual power was the head, consequently taking the head of an enemy meant appropriating themselves of that power.
A part from their bloody rituals, we know also about their bloody warfares.
They were a bellicous population and it is stunning to know that even womens went to war and led entires tribes.
Womens’ condition was surprisingly better than other populations, like the most powerful at the time: the Roman one.
The Roman womens were considered good only at giving birth babies, taking care of their house and their husband; on the contrary the Celtic womens were considered equal to men, they could choose their partners and own properies.
Summing up the Celtic population was completely different from the one we descend, from the society structure to the women condition; it is exactly for this reason that it is interesting and widens our horizons knowing other cultures
