A WORD IS DEAD – ANALYSIS
The title is taken from the first line of the poem A Word is Dead and it makes me reflect about a word that you don't use anymore. The poem consists in six lines organized into two tercets, which express different opinions: in the first tercet the poetess says that a word dies when someone says it (the common people’s opinion) and in the second tercet the poetess says that a word begins to live when it is said (the poetess’ opinion). There is no space between the tercets. In the first tercet, you can find an alliteration of the “d” and “s” sound, which remind you to something stopped. Between the first two lines, you have a rime (dead – said). The vowel sound is long to make the rhythm slower and give the idea of vastness. You have an enjambment between the fourth and the fifth line to accelerate the rhythm of the poem. |
