Winter is a poem written by the british poet Walter de la Mare. By reading the title, one could easily think that the poem may be about winter season. But what about this poem layout? Well, it is arranged into 3 stanzas of 5 lines each. There isn’t a real rhyme scheme, but the order of rhyming words seems to suggest the gait of the snow, slow and continuous. Now I will report below this strange order: A A B C B
D D E F E
G G H H H You can find some examples of enjambment: - “The robin with its burning breast / Alone sings now” (ll.3-4-5); - “The rayless sun / Sheds its last ebbing light” (ll.6-8); - “Spread / Unearthly white” (ll.9-10). By reading the poem, you can prove that predictions you made in advance were right. Indeed, the protagonist is a winter landscape, portrayed while it was getting dark. I really liked it because it’s able to convey feelings you may have looking at a snowfall, such as calm and happiness. Moreover, the poet was able to write with the attentions of an adult, but giving the poem fascination as he had seen through a child’s eyes. |
