Winter by Walter de la Mare

I expect the poem to be about a negative vision of the world, because the word “winter” suggests desolation and death. The poem is arranged into three stanzas of five lines each. The rhyme sequence is AABCB for every stanza.

When I read the title, I feel a sense of solitude and cold. The alliteration of O and the slow rhythm describe the static and desolate landscape. In this sea of ice, a robin sings alone, like one who has lost everything. The words like rayless, clouded and cold wind carry out the depression of the poet. Considering these aspects, you can say the landscape figures out the devastated soul of the poem, who is the robin singing alone.
