Analysis on “Whit a kiss I die” Romeo: Ah, Cara Giulietta, Perchè sei ancora così bella?
O felice pugnale. Questa è la tua guaina. Là arrugginisci, e lasciami morire. [Si trafigge e cade] In the present text I’m going to analyse “Whit a kiss I die”, an extract from act 5 scene 3 of “Romeo and Juliet”. First of all considering the title it creates in the reader the expectation that in this part of the text someone is going to die maybe while or through the act of kissing someone else. The layout is usual. In the lines from 7 to 10 the writer repeats the here word three times, to remark that Romeo wants to die right there, besides his beloved. Romeo compares death to a lean, abhorred monster that wants to keep Juliet as his paramour, so the protagonist wants to die to protect her and stay with her forever. Indeed in the 12th line he says that their flesh is world-wearied, so they want to die even because then they can live happily and without problems/complications brought up by their families. When Juliet wakes up she sees Romeo’s corpse and decides to kiss him hoping to get some poison, but then she decides to make it brief, so she takes his dagger and she stabs herself. Whit the word sheath she intends her stomach, that is where the dagger is let to sit and she tells him to rust there and let her die, so she can reach his real love. |
