In Europe, during the second half of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution was changing totally social and political traditional aspect. There was a lot of people moving to the city, searching for better working conditions, but finding only poverty and unacceptable hygienic conditions. For this reason a lot of people decided to move to the “New World” (the United States of America), hoping to be able to restart here a new better life.

I think the journey to America was not like today’s emigrants journeys. Today emigrants are treated in inhuman ways, whereas I think that at those times there was only a distinction between richer and poor people: the first ones had better conditions because they could pay more, while the second ones received a worst treatment, but still acceptable and human.

The Federal Immigration Act blocked a massive immigration, because, after it, a lot of people weren’t accepted in the Land; this tendency increased also with the creation of Ellis Island, where a lot of immigrants had to stay for a long time to be attentively inspected. This also reflected upon steamships: drivers became more and more careful about whom they let on board, because it wasn’t useful to drive to the USA some people (for example, affected by some kinds of illnesses), knowing that they certainly wouldn’t be accepted once arrived there.

The immigrants often accepted the least desirable jobs, and usually became specialised in a specific area of work according to them ethnicity.
