NOTE TAKING

Note taking is one of the basic skills a student is supposed to acquire at school, because taking notes is a competence that will come in handy to you in different situations in life. Indeed, note taking is a process that requires the ability of understanding a text and writing down all the main messages the text conveys, in order to make a casual reader understand that topic, even if he hasn’t listened to the text or he hasn’t read it, but this obviously depends on the type of text.

According to the quotation, note taking is one of the most important basic skills and it has to be taught at school. Studies have made clear that material and notes prepared by the teacher are not as effective as the notes written by the student. This means that writing your personal notes will help you more in the future than studying on notes prepared by another person. Indeed, the notes a student takes have their personal features, as organization, format, schemes and style of writing. As a result, it is easier for the student to study on something he has written by himself, following his personal method. Moreover, writing down your own notes implies an attentive listening or reading of the text, and this obviously leads to a more deepened comprehension.

On the other hand, students often think that note taking is not that useful, and state it is a boring activity or a waste of time. Indeed, they think their effort in listening and understanding the lesson does deserves nothing if they will be able to study from a power point or from the book. So education to note taking should start from the primary school, so that students will start to consider it as a necessary activity to their development at school, at university, and also in life.

To conclude, note taking in a necessary but complex process that has to be improved day after day, in order to learn how to get the best from the text you are listening or reading. Note taking will teach you how to organize your ideas and how to write them on the paper, combining your thoughts and knowledge with what the speaker in front of you is saying.
