Postmodern novel after the second world war

Features:

  • Narrator is more evident
  • most important narrative technique à there is a third person narrator who mainly speaks from the characters’ point of view (Connell and Marianne)

They are two teenagers.

The novel is about their love story.

The novel is a genre of character that are placed in a space and time. How are they built up? They are built up around other characters; they show a development in their parabola.

We know them though their body language; we know what they think à the writer reports their ideas and inner thoughts (through the use of shifts of point of view, dialogues, telling and showing) à the reader has the feeling to be inside their head

Connell is a typical Irish name. Setting changes from a small village to a big important one (Dublin)

The narrator decides to move the characters from the country to the town to discuss if the relationship may change.

They are displaced in a city (Connell)

When Marianne moves to a capital, she becomes popular

The initial relationship completely turns up-side-down
