James Joyce is one of the most important novelist of post-modernism. He was born in Dublin in 1882 and was educated at Jesuit school. He studied languages and all their literature in order to understand how they work. Differently from the writers of his country, he was not interested in freeing Ireland from British domination. His culture had a European vision and he thought like a European man rather than an Ireland one. He was not interested in Celtic culture, and so to rescover the Ireland identity in order to create a national conscience. Indeed he was interested to offer a realistic portrait of Ireland life and to develop a cosmopolitan point of view.

Joyce left Ireland with his wife Nora and he went to Italy, in particular to Trieste, to teach English at the University. Here he had two sons and he passed difficult moments. Indeed, when Joyce published his jobs was considered obscene and for this reason he did not receive any moneys. His first work was a collection of poems called “Chamber music”, and after that he published “The Dubliners”.

In 1915 he moved to Zurich and he maintained his economical problems. He was helped from people that believed in him and in his works.
