The object of the present text is to make a comparison between the figure of “Eveline” in the short story and one of the two protagonists of “Normal People”, Marianne. The two girls are both Irish adolescents (19 years old) and they are forced to grow in a difficult familiar situation. In addition, both are victims of violence. Considering the level of autonomy, Marianne is more independent than Eveline because she is a determined girl and doesn’t care about what others think about her. Eveline is unable to make decisions and she hasn’t a personal point of view about life. She can’t judge the situations or express personal considerations. Considering the social class, Marianne is more well-off than Eveline.
