“Eveline” is a post-modern story written by James Joyce. It takes part of the collection “The Dubliners”. All these texts do not pay attention on the plot, but they prefer giving more importance to characters’ thoughts, like the rest of the post-modern ones. Just reading the title, the intelligent reader understands that the text is about a female characters and he/she knows that Joyce pay a lot of attention on her interiority, like in clear example of post-modern story. Analyzing the structure, the reader notes that the text is arranged with dialogues and narration. Probably, Joyce adopt this kind of genre because he wants that the reader understands characters interiority through their voices. Considering the setting, the reader identifies three different spaces:
Like the others stories of “The Dubliners”, “Eveline” illustrates the eternal indecision between staying and leaving everything behind. This Dublin portrait reflects the women’s conflicting in early twentieth-century felt between a domestic life rooted in the past and the possibility of a new married life abroad. At the start of the story, Eveline feels happy to leave her hard life, but after a few moments, she worries about keeping promises to her dead mother. She grasps the letters she had written to her father and brother, revealing her inability to let go of those family relationships. This is why Eveline is a static character and she does not want to change because she is not able to do that. She shows the peculiar characteristic of “Dubliners” story: she is paralyzed and she underlines her inability to take decisions. Another important theme expressed by the author is the epiphany, a sudden revelation that arises in a person from an apparently banal event and which detonates a new awareness about his or her existence. In “Eveline” the epiphany is showed by Frank arrival. Indeed, she must leave with Frank and embark on a new phase in her life, but she remains fixed in a circle of indecision. She highlights so a great paralysis and immobility. In the text, a lot of space is reserved for girl's thoughts like memories of the past, hopes about the future, reflections on the present. All that features are the classical ones of a post-modern story and they refer to the stream of consciousness and the internal monologue, that are characterized by flashback and use of metaphors.
