The Dead

 

  • people are celebrated an annual ritual at Morkan’s house;
  • in the first part on the short story there are introduced guests and it is important in the economy of the story because it creates expectations in the reader’s mind since the main protagonist Gabriel is introduced like an intellectual;
  • Lily is the household of Morkan’s house and she has to welcome guests;
  • the narrator focus the attention of the reader in the dialogue between Lily and Gabriel because it is an anticipation of the story’s end;

 

First Part:

  • it creates the sense of hurry;
  • it provides the idea that Lily is busy because she has to respect order that she has received;
  • the reader understands what dance it is;
  • it provides the idea that guest are people involved in music;

 

MUSIC = key concept 

  • there are used words connected to the semantic field of music: piano, soprano, organ..

 

SNOW = key concept

  • symbol;

 

GABRIEL:

  • is an intellectual;
  • Is a modernist character;

 

STORY’S END:

Image: Gretta is a sick woman, she has no energy;

            Gabriel has a sense of posses for Gretta;

Gabriel = physical desire for his wife;

             = middle-aged man;

             = sense of being free, escaping (like in Eveline);

Gabriel meets some obstacles while he is going in his room with his wife;

Gabriel wants to put the light off to create an intimate and sensual atmosphere.
