The Albatross: a giant of the sky The Albatross family is Diomedeidae. The Albatross is one of the largest seabirds on Earth, that lives in the oceans. There are more than twenty kinds of albatrosses, most of which live above the southern hemisphere’s oceans. Albatrosses are known for their excellent flying skills, as well as for the difficulty they have with take-off and landing. They can glide for miles on end without having to flap their wings a single time. Albatrosses spend most of the time in the air or on water. In calm air an albatross prefers to rest on the water surface. Like other oceanic birds , albatrosses drink seawater. They only return to the dry land of the coast to have their young or court a mate. The giants of the sky are monogamous creatures and loyally return to court their mate, time after time. Albatrosses feed primarily on squid, but also eat krill and fish. The Albatross live long and may be among the few bird to die of old age. |
