Bad King or Big Friendly Giant?

I have always loved my son, even if Can is a free spirit who cannot spend too much time in the 'nest', in fact he has always been a traveler. Today he called me after a long time and he confided to me; in this period of his life he is very confused and for this reason he wanted to listen to the opinion of a loved person.

Yesterday Can docked in Üsküdar, a small town near Istanbul. Just back after a long journey along the Italian coast, he needed spare parts for his yacht, that I bought for his twentieth birthday. Indeed he has had some problems during the navigation. Can, just arrived, first asked for information for a sailors’ shop and then he was directed to the center of the small town.

He told me that the town was full of colorful flowers and in the air there was a very good scent of spring flowers, almost familiar to Can: feminine, delicate but with some aggressive notes ... maybe it will remind him someone?

Meanwhile he was looking for sailors’ shop it started to rain, so he decided to look for a shelter. But wait to find out what the most absurd part is: destiny created a proper coincidence. Can entered into the same cinema where Sanem had just entered. Can perceived it from two particular details: he recognized the girl from her fragrance and from the dress that he bought to her during their voyage to India. I’m my opinion it’s so strange to recognize a person in this way!

During the movie, Can preferred to keep distances from her. He thought she feels angry with him. Can told me that despite not seeing each other in the eyes, a sense of melancholy lingered in the room and nostalgia pervaded his soul. So he decided to stay for a few minutes only to watch her and then he left the theatre. I think that he had to talk with her to resolve the contrasts between them but he preferred to go away.

Once back at the dock he received a visit from my dear sister, Arzu. Can and his aunt get along very well because they are very similar in character. I’m very glad of that meeting: she made him reflect and she opened his eyes to what he really feels to Sanem. She decided to give him a gift that would take away any doubt. The meeting was what my son needed in that moment because it gave him the opportunity to not give up in front of the “heart”’s dangers.

The same night Can decided to unwrap the present and as soon as he opened it he understood it was Sanem’s novel. In that moment I image he felt very moved and it shouldn’t have been easy for him. Indeed he told me he waited for a while holding it between his hands and trying to find the courage to read the novel. And he so did. But when he realized the novel was about him, he wasn’t sure at all he would want to read it because it meant to find out what Sanem really thinks about him.

The day after Can was returning to his yacht, moored to the same pier where Sanem was. In my opinion the jetty is a silent place where the only sound is that of the sea waves. It’s the perfect place where everybody can remaind past’s moments.

All of a sudden they met and Can tried to talk to her. She was reluctant and they sadly argued. Sanem told him she was really angry and went away, leaving Can alone. From what my son told me, Sanem rejected his attempt to talk to her. This makes me feel so sad beacuse I know how much he cares about her. Can stayed alone with his thoughts , questions, doubts and insecurity that only Sanem can resolve.

Can reported to me that their last meeting happened at Sanem’s house, in her garden. It was in the evening. He took his aunt ’s advice to heart. He tried to go closer to her in tiptoed and in an almost religious silence. She was preparing her favorite fragrance, made of violets and dasies. She was so concentrated on her task that she cannot perceive Can’s presence. There was a hidden and tense atmoshere around the place when Can shyly asked for a little bottle of the fragrance she was preparing. According to what he told me her scent reminds her wherever he goes. That perfume is part of her and constitutes the attraction that made her unforgettable. Can decided to leave and he left Sanem alone.

Can, brokenhearted and desperate, threw the yacht locator into the ocean: he wanted to disappear and to have time to think. He only brought with him Sanem’s fragrance and their love story, "Bad King or Big Friendly Giant? "

Sanem has always seen him like the "Bad King” and afterall Can thinks the same. Actually I have always cosidered him like a "Big Friendly Giant", outside he seems to be strong, brave and self-confident but instead his inner side he is weak and he needs love. On the other hand, I taught him: every human being needs love!
