He is looking his wife (she is in bed)

What is the the object to focus on details? It is a Joyce’s technique to create realism.

TYPICAL STRATEGIES:

the reader imagines the scene;

sentences with different language;

the reader takes part in the scene.

A man died for her sake”: Gretta is the topic.

What is the purpose? To analize narrative technique and strategies.

Gabriel’s atttraction isn’t only phsycal.

Features of the text:

language in the specific site;

dramatic way of writing;

the scene focus the attention in what happens (to cristalize something and fix in the memory);

The narrator reports what he saw without commenting.

From the apparent and sensual scene, the narrator brings the reader in the Gabriel’s mind.

He thinks of death and somebody is dead.

The topic is introduced by “colon” (the death will be recurring and coherent with the next sequence)

translate= to bring in an another code

multimedia= to translate things into multiple means

Cinema comes from the literature.

What does the narrator want with this strategies?

He wants to convey the idea of somebody died for Gretta.

Gabriel compares his behaviour with other man.

Use of the language: repetition of the allitterative sound “h” (it slows down the reader)

It conveys a sense of burden (peso) who becames part of Gabriel’s problems.

The narrator plays on the relation between the subject pronouns (him/he/ her husband) different ways to speak himself

Into Gabriel consciousness: the center of modernist analysis

The inner life comes to life/ surface graduality

The modernist narrator leads the reader to get into the character's head.

The theatrical text is shorter than a narrative text.

It is important to understand what the writer wants from us.

The narrator uses the catafores (you have to keep reading to understand)“svelamento”

Preparatory setting: not clear atmosphere: it raapresents Gabriel’s mental confusion

Their relationship isn’t comparable to that of a normal couple.
