Chapter I - OF THE PRINCIPLE OF UTILITY

Utilitarianism was a political, economic and social doctrine which was widespread at the beginning of the 19th century among the industrial middle class whose interests it suited. Jeremy Bentham was the main theorist of this doctrine.

  1. By utility is meant the property of an object that aims to the benefit, advantage, pleasure, good, or happiness.
  2. The principle on which the “utility” is based is the Principle of Utility. This kind of principle has the assignment to decides if an action can be considered approved or not, considering the wellness of the community. 
  3. The way in which utility can affect policies is based on the fact that many of the measurements of government are dictated by the principle of utility so they are considered correct or incorrect depending on the happiness of the population.
