In this text I am going to analyse of the protagonist’s characteristics of the romantic comedy “Erkenci Kus”, the original name of the video that means “Early Bird” in English. During this analysis I’m going to focus my attention on the character of Can, he is the male protagonist of the romantic comedy. To accomplish my goal I am going to consider the way the film director highlights the main character, therefore, during the development of my analysis I’m going to follow step by step the progression of the scenes that compose the second part of the first episode. As the smart reader can notice, there’s something missing in the first part of the episode, and what’s missing is Can, the protagonist; noticing this absence this reader must also have wondered the reason of the choice. This absence is obviously wanted by the writer to create curiosity, suspense, desire to know and as a result make the watcher keeping his attention on the action. To solve all the watcher’s doubts the film director makes Can show up after a missed phone call from his brother Emre. The contrast between the city centre of Istanbul and the wild landscape ,where the watcher can see Can for the first time is, breathtaking: the shift is so strong that everybody who’s watching the programme must have wondered what was going on. Why would somebody like Emre look for someone’s who’s in the wild nature? Who are the viewers going to see in these framings? What is he doing there? All these questions will find an answer, but only after some important details that anticipate the personality of the character: there are some powerful close ups on some wild-exploring equipment left on a side of a river. The soundtrack is exciting, it seems to anticipate something really relevant, wild, strong (as it actually is); vivid colours of the kayak, water, equipment and of surrounding nature help to attract the watcher’s attention on the act. Even Can’s physical appearance tells a lot about his personality: his wide shoulders show he’s a sportive man, used to do extreme sports; his wild beard and long hair resemble his attitude to a wild life-style. Also his clothes show he doesn’t care much about physical appearance and people’s opinion of him. He seems to have real fun, even if he’s taking serious risks during this activity: he must be habituated to this kind of extreme adventures; this characteristic of the protagonists in particular catches the watcher’s attention and curiosity. Everything about him is an open window on his personality, and he seems to be the exact opposite of his brother, an elegant-dressed man, who likes office work and a comfortable life. Another important aspect of Can’s character is that, even if he does not like working in the company, he seems to be really love by employees who work there, you can affirm that by looking carefully how people greets him when he enters the building: not only with respect, because he’s the boss’s main son, but friendly, like he’s a friend of them. This means also that Can’s a sociable person, and a good worker. Concluding, in this part of the episode the watcher can clearly see the most influent aspects of Can’s personality, just by paying some attention at the details, at the people who surrounds him and on how does he act. |
