Oliver wants some more

 

The object of the present text is to provide a personal analysis of an extract from the chapter 2 of “Oliver Twist”, the social novel written by Charles Dickens in 1837-39.

 

Considering the title, the writer focus immediately the reader’s attention on the protagonist of the novel, Oliver Twist and on his sense of lack. In this way, the reader notices the Oliver’s

dissatisfaction and he is curious to discover what he needed. However, he will know it only at the end of the text.

 

To start with the text is visually organized in one long paragraph. Considering the content, it may be divided in two sequences: the first concerns the detailed narration of the tragic conditions of life, typical of child and younger in England during the Industrial Revolution; the second part highlights the main feelings of the working class. The function is to illustrate important elements of this historical period : business, production and economic profit.

 

The characters presented to the reader are the young workers, in particular Oliver Twist, the master, his assistants, Mr Bumble and Mr. Limbkins. The writer makes the reader aware of the terror mood always present in the character’s life by means of punitive actions and reactions to these gestures. Oliver, with his request shows to be brave.

 

Referring to the setting, the extract is set in a monotonous factory, in particular in a room where the younger were fed. The writer’s object is to show scenes of everyday life and he devises the setting with a detailed description about food habits of workers. The omniscient narrator provides comments and underlines what is wrong. In addition he knows the interior condition of the characters and he tries to communicate it to the reader.

 

Considering the syntax, the writer uses mostly main phrases that result concise and clear. In this way the reader feels the rigor and severity of the place. Moreover, the direct speech with brief sentences creates suspence. Therefore, the reader is curious to know what will happen.

 

Regarding the overall effect of the text, the reader imagines a dark, gloomy and sad place where the workers are vulnerable and forced to execute orders without possibility to express their needs.

 

To conclude the ideal reader could belong to common people because everyone after reading this text are led to make a reflection and feels strong emotions.
