“The Faithful Swallow”

TITLE EXPECTATION

The title and its meaning is not clear immediatly. But we expect might be about a “faithful” animal. Infact, reading the poem, we can associate this animal to a bird. The poem tells about the life and the decisions of this bird and the author (Thomas Hardy) express the bird’s though as if it were speaking. Infact the author uses the direct speech in almost all the poem.

As we said, the poem tells about the decision of this bird to stay where it is, even if summer is ending and the cold season is arriving. It chooses to stay in the same frickle and not to move to another But when December arrives it says it didn’t expect exactly it would serve frost, hunger and snow. But at this poit it was too late to go, so it had to stay there.

LAYOUT

As we can see, the poem consists of two stanzas of eight lines each. The meaning of the stanzas is contrary. Infact in the first stanza the bird thinks to have made the right choice: besides it calls who choose to go away from there “fickle”. In the second stanza its thought is changed instead. It didn’t expect the cold, the hunger it is taking on and we can understan that the decision it has made was wrong, even if it doesn’t say in a directly way.

What strikes attention more is the twelfth line: it consists of only one word.  The word “fedelity” play a key-role in the poem and may it is connected to the title reinforcing its meaning.

CONNOTATION

It is through the assonance “ei” expresses by the words “said”, “stay”,”they”, the poet rappresent the contest of the first stanza, meanwhile the second one is characterize by the repetiotion of the sound “me” expressed by the words “came”,”same”,”me” and the sound “no” expressed by words “not”,”know”,”snow”. This convey another contest, contrary to the first one.

In the first stanza the words “summer” and “August” belong to the same semantic field. They communicate me hot, the sun, the sea, and the yellow color of the sun.

In the second stanza instead, the words “December”,”not”,”frost”,”snow” communicate me something grey, sadness, unhappiness and something empty.
