THE DOVE
Considering the title the poem may to be about a dove which stands for peace, purity and liberty. The title may has a symbolical meaning, because the animal is an important aspect and figure with its lots of shades.
The speaking voice is somebody who shows the picture about Picasso. The dove is white and the background recalls the color of clay and the battle ground.
Considering the lay-out , the poem is arranged in one single stanza of 9 free lines, but there are some which are longer than other ones. There is no pattern but the the reader can distinguishes two parts in the poem.
In the first part of the poem the speaking voice is showing the reader something about Picasso. His function is to illustrate, to introduce the lecture of the poem and it's meaning. The picture shown near the poem is Picasso with the dove. He is hugging the bird. In Guernica, a famous work of the artist , the dove is an important figure in the war. It brings peace and serenity.
In the third and fourth lines the speaking voice uses a simile to compare the dove and dreams with pottery. In particularly he or she says that ''the dove and dreams as fragile as pottery''. Intelligent readers can understand that keeping peace is difficult because peace is an hard concept in life, so our freedom is fragile as pottery and we need to keep peace.
Last lines are about the importance of the color because they recall of something or somebody which is characterized by this color. When we think about colors, we thing about sight.
The effect of sound creates the idea of distance, experiences that are very far away and also in a open space. This idea is given by the terrible situation of the war. It is also created by the use on the density of vowel sound which are used in very near and close lines. In the poem there are also some alliterate and consonance sounds like the repetition of sound '' D'' which is a dental one : dove, dream, old, dark, ground...
In this poem the key words are : dove, white and brown. The color white recalls the idea of purity , the color brown recalls the clay and the end of life, because people throw clay over the bar.
The message of the poem is that keeping peace is difficult because in everyday life everybody wants to show his/her reasons and be right. The reader understand that the dove is a symbol of peace after the war. It is a protest poem to the war in Vietnam.
