1)The speaking voice is Ulysses, it is a monologue, to an unspecified audience. He is old and contemplates his age Ulysses has just come back to Ithaca, but he doesn’t like his present situation because he prefers traveling.
2) HIS PAST LIFE (LINES 6-19) Ulysses speaks about his great adventure. He has become a name, he has travelled a lot, he has lived greatly, he has suffered greatly. Expressions such as ‘’enjoy'd greatly’’, ‘’suffer'd greatly’’, ‘’hungry heart’’, ‘'drunk delight of battle‘’ reveals Ulysses nostalgia for those days and his need to leave again.
View of present and future (19-32) In these lines Ulysses thinks about his present and his old age. Ulysses says that you shouldn't stop, you should go on. Words such as pause, end, rust, little convey the idea of death.
Attitude to Telemacus (33-44) Telemachus is his heir to whom everything belongs. Ulysses gives the sceptre to Telemachus, who has the ability to administer rugged people. He seems to be the opposite of Ulysses, indeed he his ‘’labour’’, ‘’good’', ‘’common duties’’, indeed he is the typical victorian’s man and he has Victorian’s mentality
Address to his mariners (45-70) In these lines Ulysses introduces his mariners and describes behaviours, attitudes, landscapes, voyages he has seen and done. He analyzes his whole life conscious about his old age. He wants to leave again.
3 A) Ulysses is old, he has made many travels with his mariners, he isn't happy of his present situation. Differing from the hero of the Odyssey he doesn't want to live in Ithaca, he wants to travel. Ulysses knows the difference between him and his son. He is "centred in the sphere of common duties” while Ulysses just want to travel.
3 B) Tennyson sides with Ulysses rather than Telemachus because he recognizes his young spirit and his desire for not wasting his life. In addition, in line 39 referring to Telemachus he says "most blameless is he". Ulysses' s son is like a king of the Victorian, He has all the typical qualities of Victorian man.
4)The poem reflects the sense of youth's loss but at the same time it conveys the idea of "the need of going forward" and underlines the determination and courage of the hero who can be compared to Tennyson himself thanks to his tragic experiences
5) This poem is written as a dramatic monologue. The lines are in iambic pentameter, which give a fluidity to Ulysses's speech. The poem is divided into paragraph, each of which has a specific theme. The tone of Ulysses is reflective, contemplative and hopeful. |
