1)      - Ulysses is speaking. In the first part he is referring to an ideal reader or to someone who is listening the poetry. In the second part he speaks to his mariners.

2)

Life on Ithaca (lines 1-5)

It   is uncivilised and lacks excitement. Negative adjectives such as idol, aged,   savage convey Ulysses’ total dissatisfaction with life on Ithaca

His   past life (6-18)

Ulysses   says he passed good and bad moments and that all his experience are   fundamental for him because are a part of all that he has met

View   of present and future (19-32)

Ulysses   thinks about his past actions and that he isn’t more young, but he doesn’t   want to spent his time in a vile way.

Attitude to Telemachus (33-44)

Ulysses   leaves Ithaca to his son Telemachus, that is different from his father. He loves   the island and he know how to make mild and subdue his rugged people.

Address   to his mariners (45-70)

Ulysses   says to his mariners that they have always been faithful on him and convince   them that even if they are old, it is not late to do something

3)      A) Ulysses is portrayed as an old man, who is watching his land, Ithaca, and is thinking about all his great actions and memories. The intelligent reader can understand that Ulysses is a brave and strong man, who faced up bad and good moments, but he is not satisfied of his life and so he decided to try a new travel. Ulysses and Telemachus are in opposition: the son loves Ithaca while Ulysses leave it. The figure of Ulysses is very different from the hero of the Odyssey because he is old and he is moved by the desire to have new experiences.

B) The poet is critical with Telemachus and he says that the Ulysses’s son must change behaviour to governates the island. Indeed, the poet he is accord to Ulysses’ way of thinking. Ulysses is the spokesman of the poet.

4)      Yes, it does. The poem opens a reflection about the death, the sense of the life and about what is very important in the life. This creates in the reader a sense of loss in the reader.

5)      This poem is written as a dramatic monologue: the entire poem is spoken by a single character, whose identity is revealed by his own words. The poem is divided into four paragraph-like sections, each of which comprises a distinct thematic unit of the poem. There are no rhymes. The meter is a free verse. There is the alliteration of the letters L, M, H, R and S. The alliterations are used by the poet when he wants to underline a concept or a verse.
