EX. 2

Life on Ithaca (lines 2-5) —> His life on Ithaca is not the best. He feels imprisoned since his real nature is of a traveller and he can not stay in a place for so many time. He didn’t also have a good consideration  of his family, since he considered his dad as “idle” and his mom too “aged” for her role of Queen of the Island. He didn’t like smooch even the people that lived on the island of Ithaca, nor the rules they adopted, since they weren’t equal.

His past life—> He has passed his life travelling. Indeed he has discovered what suffering and joy really ware and how to face them. During his main experiences he learned many things that he didn’t known, he met new people and find out new customs from other cultures. He lived really intensively and his many travels made the person he was.

View of present and feature (19-32) —> Ulysses expressed his feelings through an inner monologue. He found out that life is very short and it is dull to stop doing things you like (as travelling), if they make you fell happy. Indeed with the expression “not to shine in use”, he expressed the importance to live at best everyday.

Attitude to Telemachus (lined 33- 44)—>  Ulysses considers his sin really affixable and ready to take his role of King of the island. Ulysses also thinks that his son will be so great to teach to rough people, good manners.

Address to his mariners (line 45-70) —> Ulysses has an high consideration of his mariners and he considers them faithful partners of travels. He is very bond to them because with them he passed very hard moments but also great ones.

EX. 3

In the text Ulysses is presented as a middle age man, not happy with his present situation and with his hometown. Indeed, inside him there is a feeling of leave everything and start travelling again, in order to live intensively as he did in the past. Comparing Ulysses to his son Telemachus, they are very different person. Indeed Ulysses is a very enterprising person, who lives life day per day. On the other hand, his son is really different from him because is more able to make decision for his population and to find out new methods in order to make Ithaca become a better place. Another important difference is that Ulysses needs to start a new voyage in order to feel like he is living at best his life, his son indeed does not feel this necessary. The main symbols that characterise the figure of Ulysses are : “ voyage”, “family (only his son)” and  the importance of the concept of “life”. Ulysses is different from the hero described in the Odyssey because that one is, on the contrary, a very young man who does not know what the real meaning of life is and the importance of voyages. He is the right opposite of the Ulysses described in this text, more aware about his actions.

EX. 4

The poem reflects the sense of loss in the absence , felt by Ulysses, of a home and a family to return to. Therefore he seeks this shortcoming in his voyages.

EX. 5

The words used in this poem were chosen carefully and they make the poem sound like a music. In this text there is the presence of the iambic pentameter and a particular thing is that the poet does not use rhymes. Indeed the rhythm of the poem is recreated by the alternation of the past life and present life of Ulysses.
