Analysis on My last Duchess by Robert Browning Considering the title, my last Duchess, it creates the expectation in the reader that this poem is going to tell something about the writer’s lust Duchess, but, from this prevision, the image of the text is still blurred, unclear. The structure in which the poem was written is plain and simple and represents the typical style of a poem’s layout. In the text there are a lot of rhymes and even a good amount of internal rhymes. The poem is about the speaker, probably Robert Browning, defining to the reader the realism of his last Duchess painted, because she looked as if she was real, or that Fra Pandolf painted. So the writer creates a back story as if he managed to give life to the Duchess and how by looking and the painting she felt so real, as if she had a real heart and real feelings. So the overall effect that this poem creates in the reader is a sense of having the chance, even by only reading this text, to look at this extraordinary painting and its actual resemblance to reality. And finally the ideal reader for this poem is actually everyone, but who reads it has, obviously, to understand a not contemporary way of writing. |
